Kathleen and Sean’s Summer Wedding at The Garrison

Somewhere around eight o’clock, with the sun dropping fast over the Hudson at The Garrison, Kathleen and Sean stepped away from their own reception for a few minutes and stood together on the hill above the river, just the two of them, before the last of the light went.

Kathleen and Sean met in high school and started dating in 2010. Sean proposed on a beach in Falmouth five years later, a little nervous about it by his own account. He works as a video editor and has his own eye for photography, which came through in how specific he was about what mattered to him for the day. Kathleen studied music and history education before her career took her into research work at an energy firm in the city. Going into their wedding, they were clear about one thing: they wanted it to feel like them, relaxed and genuine, without the pressure of a performance.

Getting ready

The day started at a hotel in Fishkill, where Sean got ready with his dad and groomsmen and handed out personalized gifts before the twenty-minute drive to The Garrison. Kathleen got ready in the suite there with her mom and her maid of honor, Elise, in a morning that was quiet except for the bridesmaids’ nervous chatter. Her first look with her father happened in that room, and it was an emotional one. I learned quickly that his sense of humor runs dry and sarcastic, the kind that takes a beat to land.

First look and ceremony

Sean and Kathleen’s own first look happened in front of the stone gazebo, and I stayed back and let them have it rather than directing the moment. The ceremony followed under the pergola, with the Hudson stretched out behind them toward Storm King and Beacon. Right before the vows, Sean’s brother Kevin, standing as best man, pretended he’d lost the ring, which got a real laugh out of the whole crowd. By the time they walked back out married, the morning’s nerves had turned into pure excitement.

Reception and golden hour

The reception ran high energy from the first entrance, with APB Entertainment keeping the room moving and a first dance staged inside a low cloud from a CO2 machine, danced to “Baby I’m Yours.” Partway through, I pulled Kathleen and Sean away from the party for a few minutes on the hill during sunset, away from the noise, because golden hour light doesn’t wait and neither does a wedding reception once it gets going. Rather than posing, they explored the landscape together, and for those few moments it really felt like it was just the two of them. Before the night wrapped, we stepped out once more for a lantern-lit portrait, the same idea they’d first mentioned back on our very first call together, months before the wedding.
