A surprise proposal at Boscobel House and Gardens in Cold Spring

Mike had a clear vision in mind for his proposal to Kristen, but didn’t know where that vision could possibly come to life. Throughout his research, he was pointed to Boscobel House and Gardens in Cold Spring, and then connected to me as a photographer who could help him design the day around it. After documenting their proposal I felt fortunate that he reached out. This proposal was full of emotion and the unique blend of epic views and small but beautiful details that Boscobel offers.

Planning the proposal

Soon after he reached out we connected and decided that an hour and a half for the proposal and engagement photos together made the most sense for his vision. He knew that he and Kristen would want to make full use of the grounds at Boscobel during their engagement. We met up on Thursday of the week before to walk the property together. While we walked the grounds I pointed out some of my favorite spots, and Mike shared what Kristen would love. We talked about their story and how they met, and with all of that in mind, we built a custom route.

My first instinct was to walk down to the pond and the newly restored wildflower section. Once Mike described what Kristen gravitates toward, we changed course and started at the sunken terrace patio, a brick patio overlooking the Hudson River and Constitution Marsh from above. From there it moved to the lawn in front of the event tent space, then the English garden and the colonial herb garden. Maple Alley, the tree-lined path leading up to the mansion, closed the loop.

Getting to know them

Kristen grew up on Long Island. Her taste runs toward the type of setting you would find at Westbury Gardens or Oheka Castle. Boscobel felt like a fitting proposal spot, with its sweeping views, manicured gardens, and beautifully restored architecture.

Their day in Cold Spring

Mike and I planned a longer day trip in Cold Spring together, which gave Kristen less reason to suspect the proposal. They followed the plan closely, stopping for a drink at Doug’s Pretty Good Pub, having brunch in town at the Cozy Corner Cafe, and walking Main Street to take in the shops and views. Mike described Kristen as someone who loves a good brunch and a slow afternoon of window shopping, so the day fit them well before making their final stop at Boscobel. After the proposal, they headed off to a special dinner to celebrate with friends and family.

The proposal

I arrived fifteen minutes early and set up on the terrace patio. When Mike and Kristen arrived, I documented the proposal discreetly from a distance before introducing myself. Mike had mentioned wanting a photo of them sitting on the brick wall that lines the terrace, overlooking the view, so we took a photo there before continuing with engagement photos.

From the terrace, we walked up to the lawn in front of the mansion. Views stretched toward the river and mountains to the south, and Boscobel itself to the north. Next came the English garden, where the fountain was running and sending a light mist across the flowers that softened the light for photos. From the garden we moved to the colonial herb garden with its small brick outbuilding. It has a textile screen on one side, which let soft, diffused light fall behind Mike and Kristen as they sat in its entrance.

We finished in Maple Alley, where we took photos but without posing. Genuine laughter, twirls, dips, and a few dance moves kept the energy high through the end of the photos.

If you’re planning a proposal at Boscobel

Proposing at Boscobel requires a little more planning because the grounds are extensive and offer scenic and private spots for photos around every corner. Walking the grounds together before the day itself, the way Mike and I did, allows us to build a route personalized to the two of you. My Boscobel proposal planning guide goes into more detail on how I approach planning a proposal here, including details from a fall proposal.

If you’re thinking about a proposal at Boscobel, or anywhere in the Hudson Valley, I’d love to help you plan it.

About Matthew Rigby

Hudson Valley Photographer

I'm Matthew, a documentary Hudson Valley wedding photographer based in Garrison, NY. Before this, I spent years as a teacher, which is where I learned to read a room and stay present for people. When I'm not photographing weddings, I'm probably on a trail with my wife Adriana and our dog Toby, testing out a new recipe, out for a run, or brewing beer. I also travel with my camera whenever I can, chasing the same light I look for on a wedding day.
