The Hudson Valley has no shortage of wedding venues, from the mountain and river views of the Hudson Highlands in Garrison, Cold Spring, and Beacon, to properties further north in Poughkeepsie, Saugerties, Middletown, and New Lebanon. I've photographed weddings at each venue below, so what follows is a first-hand look at what a day there is actually like: the light, the layout, and the details that matter most once you're standing in the space.

The Ruins at
Sassafras

- This restored 200-year-old Shaker settlement is one of the most intentional properties I've worked at.
- Getting ready happens in the Stone House and Caretaker's Cottage, which sleep up to 18 guests and look out over the Taconic and Berkshire ranges.
- Ceremony options include the Rose Garden, the Stone Ruins lit by string lights and votive candles, and Deere Pond beneath a weeping willow.
- For Chelsea and Alon's wedding, we split portrait time into two short blocks so they could actually get to cocktail hour and celebrate with their guests at the Moroccan Bar.
- The loop trail around the property has a variety of mountain views and other portrait backdrops.
- The Chair Factory holds receptions for up to 220 guests.
- Lara, the venue's coordinator, is known for staying responsive throughout planning.

Boscobel House

- History and elegance meet an unobstructed view of the Hudson River.
- The neoclassical mansion is the centerpiece of the grounds, surrounded by acres of gardens and sloping lawns.
- Ceremony locations range from the West Meadow to the courts and gardens, with the Pavilion hosting up to 250 guests.
- The grounds, history, and gardens offer many distinct spots for photos throughout the day.
- Boscobel sits just outside Cold Spring, which has several restaurants and bed-and-breakfasts nearby.
- Angie, their experienced coordinator, is attentive and communicative with couples leading up to their wedding and handles logistical details on the day of.

garrison
- The view here is hard to match. Your outdoor ceremony looks out over the World's End section of the Hudson River, winding into the distance and framed by mountains.
- Sunset here is dramatic, with westward views that catch the light dancing across the river below.
- The reception space is lined with glass windows, so guests can take in the view throughout the night.
- Cold Spring has a number of restaurants nearby, with more options in Beacon or Peekskill for those willing to drive twenty minutes.
- There are also several bed-and-breakfasts in the area, worth considering if you or your guests want to design a weekend experience.
- The grounds are spacious enough to host every part of your day, with plenty of room for photos.

Roundhouse
- The waterfall views behind the building are often ranked among the best wedding venue backdrops in the country.
- Beacon is a walkable, lively town, with plenty of coffee shops, breweries, restaurants, and shops nearby for a wedding weekend.
- One couple chose to marry at the church across the street, then process back for cocktail hour. Ceremonies held inside the venue have an industrial, artsy feel, with floor-to-ceiling windows.
- The venue has rooms for guests to stay and get ready that morning.
- Cocktail hour outside next to the river feels elegant and romantic as the light changes.
- The indoor spaces are fully customizable. Couples have brought large prints made from their engagement session to decorate the reception.
- The staff are efficient and used to running a high volume of weddings each year.
Beacon, NY
Arrow Park
ESTATE
- Arrow Park is an 85-acre estate built around an Italianate mansion, with exclusive use of the grounds and lake for the day.
- You can also create a weekend experience with twelve overnight guest rooms that sleep up to 28 people. Your wedding party can be together the morning of without coordinating shuttles or hotel blocks.
- Ceremony locations include a ceremonial garden, a lakefront beach area, and wooded settings for a more secluded feel.
- Golf carts handle transportation across the property. Moving a full guest list between the ceremony, cocktail hour, and reception takes time. Plan for buffers between each.
- The venue requires an outside caterer but handles bar service directly, and keeps a list of caterers who already know the property's kitchen and layout.

Manor
- The chef here has won a James Beard award, and it shows in the food.
- The staff is attentive and professional. I've seen them handle unexpected, last-minute changes with real calm and confidence.
- The grounds sit in a quiet corner of the Hudson Valley, next to Storm King Art Center.
- The mansion has an intimate feel, more like a private home than an event space.
- The prep rooms have great natural light, which makes a real difference for getting-ready photos.

Grandview
- The cocktail hour food is excellent, and dinner feels individually plated rather than mass-catered.
- The Mid-Hudson Bridge view is striking, and the westward-facing side gets front-row sunsets over the Hudson River.
- Pricing here tends to run lower than many comparable venues in the area.
- The getting-ready suite and guest lobby are newly renovated and functional.
- The outdoor ceremony space sits right next to cocktail hour and the reception, with plenty of room.
- There's an indoor ballroom for larger events, plus an attached restaurant that can host pre-event dinners.
Poughkeepsie, NY

Hollow Brook

- This is a one-stop venue, with everything on site and easy to access, overlooking the golf course's rolling hills.
- The property is spread out enough that extended portrait time here pays off. Travel the grounds by golf cart to reach different areas without eating into your day.
- Climbing the manicured hills and crossing the two long bridges over the ponds gives us some of the best scenic portrait spots on the property.
- The cocktail hour space has large windows overlooking the golf course.
- The staff is attentive, with plenty of people on hand to help the day run smoothly.
