How do I stand when I propose?
- If possible, scout your location ahead of time. I do this too, and will note where I think the best angles will be.
- When you're getting close, text your photographer. A simple "P" for parked or "W" for walking lets them know exactly where you are.
- When you arrive, look for shade if possible.
- If you can, position yourselves so your profile is facing the photographer, so you can see them out of the corner of your eyes.
- Once you're in your spot, don't worry about the photographer. They can move for the best angle. Stay where you are.
What do I wear when I propose?
- If possible, frame the proposal as a planned outing so there's time to prepare and nails and hair can be done.
- Coordinating colors photograph well. Avoid anything so bright it draws attention away from the moment.
- Comfortable shoes if you're walking to the location.
- One practical note: bright colors can reflect light and cast color across faces in photos, so softer tones tend to work better.
Questions to ask your photographer
- Will they cover just the proposal moment, or stay for photos together afterwards?
- Do they have experience with proposals and weddings, and can they adapt to changing light or weather conditions?
- Will they arrive early to scout the location and keep you updated on conditions?
- Will they help you build a detailed plan ahead of time, or simply show up on the day?
- Are they insured?
- Do they offer add-ons like extended coverage, engagement sessions, or printed albums?
- How quickly will you receive your photos? You'll want them soon. I deliver previews within 48 hours.

The best light for photos is an hour before sunset or an hour after sunrise. If you have dinner plans, proposing earlier in the evening gives you the most flexibility.

storm king art center
Storm King Art Center is one of the most photographically compelling proposal locations in the Hudson Valley. Sweeping sculpture gardens, dramatic views, and enough space to stay completely hidden until the moment arrives. They require a site fee and photographer's insurance, both of which I can help you navigate, and the grounds are worth it in any season. From New York City, take the Metro North to Beacon and the shuttle from there for $10. Check out these two bed and breakfasts if you want to spend the night nearby.

A historic riverside mansion surrounded by formal gardens with sweeping Hudson River views. They typically require a site fee, which I can help you navigate before booking.
Boscobel House and Gardens
Romantic and vintage with a modern craft twist. A natural anchor for the day if you'd like to stay nearby before or after the proposal.
The Bird and Bottle Inn
A short trail leads to sweeping river views with almost no effort. One of the most accessible spots in the area for couples who want scenery without a long hike.
Little Stony Point
Charming, walkable, and full of character. The main street, the waterfront, and the side streets all offer quiet corners worth exploring.
Downtown Cold Spring
Short trails, river views, and easy access to town. A tucked-away location where you're unlikely to share the space with many others.
West Point Foundry Preserve
A trail through the woods that opens onto a view of Cold Spring, the Hudson River, and Storm King Mountain. If shade, stillness, and the feeling of being away from everything is what you're looking for, this is the right spot.

The Bird and Bottle Inn
Just outside of Cold Spring in Garrison, with a farm-to-table seasonal menu, creative cocktails, and a warm atmosphere. A good option if you'd like to stay nearby before or after the session.
Hudson House Inn
Right on the Cold Spring waterfront on Main Street. The steak and fish entrees are worth the visit on their own.
The Pig Hill Inn
A historic inn on Main Street, just before the train tracks. A quiet, well-situated base if you're spending the night in town.
Brunch spots
The Cozy Corner Cafe and The Foundry Rose Cafe are both worth a visit. Try one before the proposal and the other after.
